Positive Social Contagion

In a recent workshop with a group of 10 Future Leaders, we talked about the idea of positive social contagion—how kindness, generosity, and care for others can spread just as easily as negativity.
It’s a simple concept, really. We’ve all heard phrases like “what goes around comes around” or “good karma.”
But how often do we intentionally focus on putting positivity into the world?
As we talked, one thing became very clear to me: these kids naturally default to doing good. Not because they’re told to—but because they love how it makes them feel.
It made me wonder whether many of us lose that instinct over time. Years of stress, pressure, and negative experiences can leave adults feeling jaded, overwhelmed, and focused on just getting through the day. Somewhere along the way, we forget our childhood wisdom to simply… be kind.
So if you’re feeling caught up in the heaviness of global news, social media, and the constant pressures of “adulting,” the Future Leaders came up with a list of small, meaningful ways you can bring positivity into your community—starting today:
Create a mini-library or book exchange on your lawn and leave notes for neighbours about your favourite reads.
Visit an elderly neighbour, learn from their life experiences, and share recipes.
Pick up trash in your neighbourhood or local park—bring a friend and learn your neighbours’ names.
Grow a front-yard garden (less grass to cut, save on food, and share what you grow).
Help animals find homes by sharing adoption posts or volunteering at a local shelter.
Donate gently used clothes to neighbours, schools, or a local giving group.
When you're making dinner, make a little extra and bring it to a neighbour.
Help people experiencing homelessness by keeping small “essentials” bags in your car.
Donate money, food, diapers, or hygiene products to your local food bank.
Walk someone’s dog, rake a lawn, shovel snow—just because.
This year, instead of focusing on becoming a “new you,” consider reconnecting with the version of yourself that knew what mattered.
Tap into your childhood wisdom. Be kind and let that positive social contagion spread.
